AI SAFETY SUMMIT

As artificial intelligence rapidly advances, so do the opportunities and the risks. The UK hosted the first global AI Safety Summit in November 2023, bringing together leading AI nations, technology companies, researchers, and civil society groups to turbocharge action on the safe and responsible development of frontier AI around the world. Read the chair’s statement on GOV.UK to see key discussions and conclusions from the Summit, which included:
 
  • 28 countries from across the globe including Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, as well as the EU, agreeing the The Bletchley Declaration on AI safety, which recognises the urgent need to understand and collectively manage potential risks through a new joint global effort to ensure AI is developed and deployed in a safe, responsible way for the benefit of the global community
  • world leaders and those developing frontier AI systems recognising the need to collaborate on testing the next generation of AI models against a range of critical national security, safety and societal risks – through a joint statement on AI safety testing
  • countries represented at Bletchley Park agreeing to support the development of a ‘State of the Science’ report that will help to build international consensus on the capabilities and risks of frontier AI
 
This is only the start of the critical global conversation. The Republic of Korea has agreed to co-host a mini virtual summit on AI in the 6 months after this Summit, and France will then host the next in-person Summit 6 months after that.
